What is strength? We could consider it as the maximum force a muscle can produce in isolation, and we often see physios isolate a muscle and say its weak, or tight, or no activated, and measure it with hand held dynamometers,  strain gauges, or even their body weight.  

We can combine muscles and use a compound lift such as a squat or deadlift and then report strength as a 1 repetition maximum and work towards targets based on that number, or we can look at the phases of a squat, and look ta eccentric or concentric phases and divide them up to look at the force of a muscle when shortening or lengthening.

You can see there is more to it that one figure and we agree that in sport whether it’s a run in the park, or the final at an Olympic games, muscle does a lot more than simple flexion.
